Morning Musume, Berryz Koubou, C-ute Results Revisited

So I was checking out the latest lot of tour merchandise on the H!P Website when I noticed something that caught my eye, towels for the latest Wonderful Hearts Tour. Nothing unusual about that you might think, but what caught my eye was the design, or rather the layout of the members of each unit on the towel. None of them follow the usual order of members within the groups, I'd imagine that this is a fairly common practice although I haven't checked on the previous Wonderful Hearts group towels. What really got me thinking is how similar they look to the last poll I did on the site and that in turn got me thinking that there must be some form of logic to the layout of the towels. They it hit me, now I might be clutching at staws here but the towels could be showing the girls in order of popularity within each unit. But if they appear to be in no order how can they possibly show that? Well take at look at the images below and I'll explain my thinking.


Right, here's my reasoning. Start at the center and then work your way out from left to right (I chose left to right as it's just the natural way I look at things like this), simple as that. And do you know what, with a couple of possible exceptions I think it might work!
So if we follow that order we can in theory, presuming that this is indeed in anyway accurate, compare the Japanese favourites against the Morning Musume, Berryz Koubou, C-ute 2008 poll results done in February this year. To help compare them easier I've redone the towels in the polling system and generated images, the top images is the order taken from the towels the image below that is the image taken from the overall votes of the poll.

Already comparing the Morning Musume images I have some thoughts as to how accurate this is, mainly because of the super low position of our winner Gakisan, instead of being in her No.1 spot she's down in the bottom third at No.7, but on the plus side Koha has risen to No.3 \\(^ ^)/

With the Berryz Koubou images there's no real drastic change and no major shifts like in Morning Musume's, members stay roughly in the same position shifting only a couple of positions either way. The ever popular top three of Berryz Koubou, Momo, Miyabi and Risako remain the in the top but in a slightly different order.

Much like Morning Musume's results there are a couple of major shifts when comparing C-ute's two images and that's with Erika and Nakki. Erika falls from third to last whilst Nakki rises from second from last to third. If this truly is the case that this shows the popularity of the girls among the fans, it looks like we'll be waiting quite sometime for an Erika PB, still fingers crossed this would mean that Nakki is due one soon and she's second on my list for members in H!P in need of a PB release.

Unfortunately I can't go into as much detail in this post as I would like to, I'll explain a little later into my reasons, but although I have a couple of niggling doubts as to the order of these images, but these are purely personal feeling that I have for some of the members who are ranking low, I'd have to say that they do look fairly accurate especially if you take into consideration PB releases and then when it doesn't exactly match up, their recent careers outside of their unit. Gakisan has the same amount released as Sayumi and obviously more than both Koharu and Mittsi, but if you then take into consideration Koha's solo career against Gakisan Athena & Robikerottsu the balance comes back into order, although that being said Mittsi should be beneath Gakisan. The Berryz Koubou results are pretty much flawless, and the PB theory holds out, with Miyabi raising above Yurina because of Buono!. C-ute, has Maimi but with Airi having more PB releases and more activity outside of C-ute (and her recent mini golf DVD) it's questionable that it should be the other way around. The real shocker is Erika being right at the very bottom, if this is anything to go by can it really be that she has the lowest fan base of C-ute in Japan??

I'm going to have to cut this post off short now, as I've got some last minute packing, tidying up and ironing to do (I'd love to know if anybody else has has such an exciting Saturday evening, as that's pretty much all I've been doing all night) as I'm off on holiday for a week. BUT to help try keep the site active whilst I'm away I've asked Chris if he wouldn't mind posting a blog post or two if can whilst I'm away, as yet I'm uncertain as to what he'll post about but I'm guessing the likelihood is one of two things, his love for Kamei or his pent up frustration of his continued forced participation in my H!P activities, whatever he posts (if he gets around to posting) it's bound to be interesting!

You know, I always forget who Gaki is, I remember all the rest and then its like "err and the other one... with the voice and the boobies."

One last comment before I go, just received an email from Ohta saying that the Hello! Project 2008 Wonderful Hearts merchandise, is up on his eBay store, personally I'm really liking the C-ute and Manoeri shirts, although I'll have to give them a miss...well unless they're still up when I get back.

Really, you forget Gakisan! Even with her smile and amazing personality...and boobs!! There's something about Gaki's personality that really just makes me happy and I love that about her. Your talk about boobies has got me thinking that I might do a post when I get back about who I think looks best in a bikini within Morning Musume :)

How could Erkia have a low fan base? She really stands out in the group, being the tallest, and in my opinion...the hottest!

I've seen bikini pics of Gaki and she looks really good, she definetly has the body and maturity for it. As for other H!P members, I haven't seen a swimsuit pic of Hitomi Saito from Melon Kinenbi. I can imagine she would look hot since she's got curves in all the right places. As for the breasts, everyone knows the winner is Okada Yui from v-u-den!

i think you're looking into this way too much, lol. I don't really see a big problem with where the members are placed. except for gaki being paired wtih mittsi. wtf is that about, i love mittsi and all........but mittsi? reina with sayu and gakikame...cmon now...

Yeah, I've she's never really stuck in my mind for some reason. Dunno why.

Probably my blinding Reina obsession (the winks, the smiles, the fuzzy hair when the other girls wake her up in the morning with natto and fake mustaches, the attitude, her famous yankee squat.)

If Reina demanded it I'd go to war with Westland - then Eastland, becouse we were never at war with Westland, they've always been out allies... (Psuedo 1984 reference - fear not. But she could defenetly run the Fatherland and I wouldn't complain.) *ramble ramble*

The popular-girl-at-the-centre layout isn't new, a lot of the CD covers have had it, not to mention visual books. It was blatantly obvious in the Berryz spring tour book last year, if memory serves- Risako always at the centre, Captain off on the edge etc. I'm in the wrong country to check at the moment though...

The flaw I see with the momusu one is Aika. Risa has tons of fans (many girls), while poor old Aika gets practically no cheers, which is especially obvious during her solo line in egao yes nude; the "Mitsui!" chant from the Osaka hellopro summer show on the weekend was pathetic compared to the roar of "Reina!" that followed it. It was kind of depressing for me that her chant hasn't gotten any louder since I first heard it (winter '07, and then later at Yossie's grad).

Linlin and Junjun don't have many fans, but there definitely are some- I saw a few people wearing the tshirts, carrying the bags etc from the first event they had. I even saw a mother buying the Linlin 2L photoset for her little daughter, it was so cute. My cheering for them was the loudest unfortunately...

I'm amazed at the amount of support Reina has now. She has always been popular, but it has grown leaps and bounds since I last saw momusu perform live.

Regarding Berryz, I'm not sure who would come first. Risako has a LOT of female fans, but I think Momoko is more popular with the guys. I think Risako had more fans at the last Berryz show I saw, but that was a year ago so I dunno. I think Momoko got more cheers at the summer show, and at the Melon Greeting they went to. I don't think Miyabi would be more popular (maybe Buono! is a factor there?).

I think Maimai is the third most popular in C-ute. It definitely isn't Saki... Kanna is probably last, too.

i agree yeah momoko is popular with the guys and yeah risako lo9ts of female fans but it is it im a natsuyaki fan yeah and umeda fan and buono momoko and airi and natsuyaki is popular nfor buono!

Zethgryn, I probably was looking too far into it, but it's the first time I've really paid attention to the 'popular girl in the middle' pattern and it just occurred to me that surely it must overflow into the rest of the design, so that the eye focuses on the more popular members with the least favourite on the outside?
Mr Waffle, the concerts and the cheering are a great way to judge popularity and I must admit to notice the cheers being louder for certain members, I'll have to rewatch the Berryz Kamen vs Cutie Ranger DVD again and see what the cheers are like.
Kazuro, I've only just watched the PV for C-ute's latest release (been away for a week) and WOW! seriously how good is it! Hopefully I'll have a chance to make some posts tomorrow during the day, I have a ton I want to write about.

DAMN IT!
I saw this up on Witch Hunting Girlscouts yesterday but didn't really pay any attention to it as they didn't have scans of the article just the magazine cover, I was kind of hoping that there wasn't going to be any photos that could land her in trouble...but it really does look like her in the pics.

Usually nothing comes of the tabloid headlines or stalker-wota gossip posted at WHG. Remember there was supposed to be a follow-up to the Kamei thing, there was some story involving Sayumi, and there's been a few reports lately of Aichan's (apparently wealthy) secret lover. None of it amounts to anything until someone snaps a photo.

erm, i dun really understand the towel position part...i had observed the ori towel pic and the one u hav rearranged......i cant really read the similarities..u did say start from the middle then go left to right or watsoever..but, i still don't get it..esp for C-ute...i saw that Yajima was the 4..then y did she become 1st in ur towel arrangement..cn u tell me how u actually compare these girls? and bout the polling below every towel arrangement of yours, is it the overall polling of who has already ranked? if it is, Yajima is awesome! kinda sad that Nakki is the 6th..

YajimaSaki fan, let's see if I can explain it better. If you look at the small images of the towels I'm saying the order of populrity within each of the units (could possibly) be worked out by starting from the middle and then working your way out from center left to right, so the person in the center would be the most popular, the person to the left of them is second most popular then the third most popular id to the right of the center.
So although Maimi is 4th in the list, she's also placed within the center and becuase I'm saying she's the most popular, then move to the left and there's Airi making her 2nd most popular and then right of center we have Nakki, making her 3rd most popular, then continue you out with the left and rights and you'll come up with my order. I hope that all makes sense.
As for the order underneath yes it's a poll I took at the start of the year I'm comparing the results of that to the order I got from the towels.

Okay, so I hate to post on something that almost everyone's stopped reading, but I though it would be worth it. I haven't been reading your blog as much recently, so I've missed a lot. Anyway, I just want to say that you might just be coincidence. Take the promotion photos for the latest singles for the groups: Resonant Blue, Yuke Yuke Monkey Dance, and Namida no Iro (not counting Edo no Temari Uta II for C-ute because it wasn't out when your post was written). Now if you take the albums shots where they are standing in one straight line, you'll see that their order for the towels is the same as in those shots. (I know by now you're thinking "But that's not right! Look at C-ute's image!" I 'm getting to that. ) Well, as has been previously pointed out many times, these types of shots are "popular-girl-in-the-middle" usually. Also keep in mind your previous theory that popularity from the pictures alternates from the center in an alternating fashion, right to left. In that case, that means that Chisato has become more popular than Mai! You, good sir, may have just given us the first glimpse of Chisato's eventual thrust into the limelight!

Lefty6409, I know it may not be that accurate, but I'm just thinking that there must be a reason to the order of how they appear in these style of photos.
I was going from a "left to right" for the order, but then the reason I chose that way was because that's the way I think, I read from left to right, so I automatically think of the left side always being first, but I guess as Japanese read "right to left" that may actually be a more accurate of doing it? I n which case you're right Chisato does appear higher than Hagitty. I guess time will tell with these things, I'll have to remember to keep an eye on the order on shots like these.
